Brevard Flooring covers every step before installation begins - demolition of the old floor, haul-away, dust containment, moisture testing, and leveling - so the new material lays flat, locks together properly, and isn't squeaking two years down the road.
We handle tear-out on every flooring type: glued-down tile, nailed hardwood, floating laminate, sheet vinyl, and glued-down carpet. Our crews bring chipping hammers, ride-on scrapers, HEPA vacuums, and self-leveling compound, and we leave the space ready for the next crew to start immediately.
Our standard demo and prep checklist
We hold to a fixed scope so there's nothing to renegotiate once work begins. Every demolition and prep job covers the same baseline.
- Complete removal of the existing floor (tile, hardwood, vinyl, carpet, or laminate)
- Dust containment using plastic sheeting and HEPA-filtered vacuums
- Haul-away and disposal of all removed material
- Subfloor inspection for rot, mold, and structural concerns
- Moisture testing with calibrated meters - especially important on Florida slabs
- Self-leveling compound applied to flatten high and low spots
- Final sweep so the installation crew can get started right away
Keeping demo dust out of the rest of your house
Old thinset, tile adhesive, and hardwood mastic can carry silica, glue residue, and, in homes built before 1990, sometimes asbestos. We seal off the work area with plastic sheeting, run HEPA air scrubbers, and wear the appropriate PPE - standard practice on commercial jobs but not something every residential crew bothers with. You get a demo you can be in the house for, without weeks of dust turning up in your kitchen.
Leveling the slab before anything else gets installed
A subfloor out of level by more than 1/8" over 6 feet will cause LVP and laminate seams to fail within a few months - and tile set over an uneven slab tends to crack. We check every job against manufacturer tolerances, apply self-leveling underlayment where needed, and patch any soft spots before signing off on the floor as ready. Flooring containing asbestos (common in homes built before 1990) requires testing and licensed abatement - we coordinate that step but don't perform the abatement ourselves.

Yes - haul-away and disposal are part of the demo price. You won't find a scrap of old carpet or tile left at the curb.
We run HEPA air scrubbers, hang plastic sheeting, and use ground-source vacuums on our chipping tools. Compared to a typical unmanaged demo, that cuts dust in adjoining rooms by roughly 90%.
We check that during the estimate. If it's already within manufacturer tolerance - generally 1/8" over 6 feet - no leveling is needed. If it's not, we quote that step separately so you can see the added cost clearly.
Vinyl tile and mastic installed before 1990 can sometimes contain asbestos. If we suspect it, we pause the job, send a sample out for testing, and bring in a licensed abatement contractor if it comes back positive. Once the area's cleared, we pick prep work back up.
